The Chartered Institute of Taxation

The Chartered Institute of Taxation http://www.tax.org.uk

The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) was established in 1930 and received its Royal Charter in 1994. It is a registered charity (No. 1037771) and is the leading professional body in the United Kingdom concerned solely with taxation.

The CIOT deals with all aspects of direct and indirect taxation.

Its primary purpose is to promote education in and the study of the administration and practice of taxation. One of its key aims is to achieve a better, more efficient, tax system for all affected by it - taxpayers, advisers and the authorities.

The Institute has over 14,000 members, including most of the United Kingdom's leading taxation experts.

The Institute requires its members to observe the highest ethical standards.

It enjoys a high international standing in taxation affairs and is a UK member body on the Confédération Fiscale Européenne (CFE), the umbrella body for 150,000 tax advisers in Europe.

There are two classes of CIOT membership.

ASSOCIATE - using the designatory letters CTA or ATII
Admission to Associate membership is achieved by passing the Institute's examination and acquiring the necessary three years' professional experience.

FELLOW - using the designatory letters CTA (Fellow) or FTII
Fellowship is attained through the preparation of a thesis or body of work of the required standard, coupled with three years' appropriate taxation experience.

International tax is becoming an increasingly important part of the work of many tax advisers, coming from a variety of backgrounds and typically spending time in more than one country.

In response, the Institute has decided that there is a demand both in and outside the UK for a specialist Diploma to meet the needs of international tax practitioners. The overall standard of the Diploma is comparable to the CTA in the UK.

The Institute works very hard to ensure that the qualification of Chartered Tax Adviser represents an assurance of high technical and professional standards, with the objective that consumers of tax advice prefer to use a CTA. This is seen as initiating a virtuous circle, whereby membership of the Institute is increasingly perceived as essential by tax advisers and their employers.
