What is a Management Accountant?

Unlike traditional accountants, whose focus is on recording the past, Management Accountants are forward looking. Their role is geared towards assessing business possibilities, grasping opportunities and shaping the future of organisations.

Management Accountants have the strategic insight to assess risk and make vital business decisions based on an accurate understanding of the business environment.

Management Accountants combine a high level of financial and management expertise with excellent business acumen and decision-making skills, which makes then essential to every business in all sectors covering industry, commerce, public sector and not-for-profit organisations.

Qualifying Management Accountants

Getting started

You will gain strategic management skills and the opportunity to develop expertise in management accounting, business management and financial management. CIMA is a practical qualification allowing you to earn while you learn and providing you with the key skills required to accelerate to senior positions.

The skills that you develop through your CIMA study will give you a wide choice of career options. They will allow you to work in a range of different industries. Our members work in diverse areas such as business analysis, management consulting, operations management and project management to name a few. Many of the world’s top Finance Directors and Chief Executives are CIMA members.

Entry routes to the CIMA Professional Qualification

To gain direct entry to the CIMA Professional Qualification, you will need to have a relevant qualification such as:

  • A degree that specialises in accounting or business.
  • The Association of Accounting Technicians (ATT) Technician level/Diploma pathway.
  • The Open University (OU) Certificate in Accountancy.
  • MBA.
  • Other relevant qualifications.
  • The CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting.

The CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting

If you are new to accounting, and do not have the relevant qualifications, as above, then CIMA has its own entry route to the Professional Qualification that you must complete before moving on.

The Certificate in Business Accounting will introduce you to the concept of management accountancy and give you the basics of accounting and business.

There are five modules, which are tested by computer based assessment (CBA), meaning that you can sit your exams at your nearest CBA centre, whenever you are ready, and your results are available to you immediately.

The five subjects areas are:
1) Fundamentals of Management Accounting
2) Fundamentals of Financial Accounting
3) Fundamentals of Business Mathematics
4) Fundamentals of Business Economics
5) Fundamentals of Ethics, Corporate Governance and Business Law.

The CIMA Professional Qualification in Management Accounting

This specialises in accounting for business and is recognised by employers around the world. The CIMA Professional Qualification syllabus is built on three pillars of learning:

  • Management Accounting
  • Business Management
  • Financial Management

Each pillar has three papers: two at managerial level and one at Strategic level.

You must complete all exams and at least three years’ relevant practical experience to qualify as a Chartered Management Accountant.

We recommend that you combine studying with relevant employment. Not only will this allow you to apply your new skills in the workplace, but is should also help you progress quickly through the qualification and be counted towards your relevant experience.
