Hi there

Just wondering if any of you have come across the issue in ARCs whereby joint bill information in automated-process reminders can be incorrect. There’s no fix available from Minisoft for any version, so I guess people must have found work-rounds? Any thoughts on the topic appreciated.
Thanks

Dear All,

I’m interested to benchmark our I.T staffing levels against other similarly sized law firms. I’m particularly interested to learn if other firms invest more or less than us in I.T. training (in terms of having an employed or sub-contracted trainer). I know that our ratios are higher than average, but wanted to see how much so.

We are:-
* 170 people in total (Full time equivalent roles including partners, fee-earners, support staff etc.)
* 6 technical IT staff (multi tasking but roughly 2 support, 2 project, 1 case plan developer, 1 manager)
* 1 part time IT Trainer (3 days per week)

If you don’t wish to supply full details of your IT team, I’d love to just know if you have a permanent IT trainer or not.

Thanks,

Hi,

We are interested in purchasing a Probate / Estate Administration system for our practice. Does anyone out there use one at their firm they would recommend?

Key features would be:-
* Allows all financial information about estate to be logged
* Calculates value of estate, tax, residual shares etc.
* Produces an Estate Account document for the executors / beneficiaries
* Produces the IHT400 and all the other tax forms
* Manages the workflow of the process with standard letters to banks, beneficiaries, legatees etc.

Our home-written case management system does all this, but it was very long winded and cumbersome to write and we’re likely to be moving to a new PMS / CMS platform later in the year. The though of re-writing a new bespoke system is giving my nightmares, and it might be cheaper and easier to just buy in a standalone package.

Thanks,
Tony

There are a large number of Travel and Expense systems on the market and Chrome River appears on the surface to be made for Professional Practices. There is the added advantage that the creators have an almost unparalleled understanding of Elite.

It would be useful to hear from anyone who has used or implemented Chrome River and hear what they like about it and what they dislike. Of particular interest is whether it has the necessary functionality to cope in the European arena in terms of VAT and per Diems.

Of course if anyone is using any other Travel and Expense systems that they would like to recommend, then that would be useful too.

Many thanks

Hi

We have an new matter management system but an old PMS. We have not yet implemented it but the additional functionality in the new MMS allows us to consider new ways of working and one of the new problems we have encountered is what to do about time recording against clients which have not yet completed the full money laundering and conflict checking processes. The likely scenario is this:

1. The FE receives a call from a potential new client and has a long discussion on the phone which results in the client confirming they want to instruct the firm.
2. The FE wants to record this time somewhere so that it can be added to the first bill to the client (or at least set off against their time recording target).
3. Do we:
    (a) allow the fee earner to record time in the MMS but not in the PMS? (the time would be posted to the PMS only if the client passes the AML/conflict checks)
    (b) allow the fee earner to incept a new client and matter from their own desktop so they can record the time as a normal matter? (in which case, what do you do if the client fails one of the AML/conflict processes?)
    (c) prevent the fee earner from recording any time until the client has completed and passed the full money laundering and conflict checking process?

I’m assuming the last option is the common method so that FEs are forced to record the time on a bit of paper or perhaps against a nominal client/matter number reserved for these sorts of situations.

Anyone encountered a similar problem?

Cheers

Kevin
