HIGH STREET LAW FIRMS
These firms often focus on specific areas of Law that are commonly used by the public and as a result are often publicly funded practices with support from the Legal Services Commission.
High Street practices are common to areas where they provide a range of services to a local community. Some of these practices offer specialist services in a particular area such as Criminal and/or Matrimonial work and provide additional services in Conveyancing, Probate, Family Law, Immigration law amongst others.
High Street practices can vary significantly in size, although it is not often you would find a practice in this category with more than 100 employees. As a result the variety of roles available for finance professionals is usually limited to the following:
- Practice Manager
- Accounts Manager
- Sole Legal Cashier/Bookkeeper
- Legal Cashier
- Costs Draftsperson/Billing Clerk
Smaller practices tend to require their finance staff to take on a wider scope of responsibilities.
A good example of this is a Legal Cashier in a small team of 2/3 would not only gain exposure to day to day management of client & office account but also additional tasks including purchase ledger, credit control & billing. However, a counterpart in a larger practice is less likely to gain exposure to such a wide variety of tasks and is more likely to focus on cashiering and not the additional tasks.
Similarly a Practice Manager may also have to undertake additional duties to Finance management including Administration, Human Resources & Systems/IT management.
