MS Teams: The evolution of unified communications

Before the pandemic, increasing numbers of legal and accounting firms were adopting more flexible working practices. But when the UK Government announced guidelines that encouraged us to work from home where we can, this trend was rapidly accelerated – with many firms left with no choice but to adapt.

As part of that adaption, one of the greatest challenges has been communication – with clients, co-workers, and suppliers alike. This is because legal and accounting firms are traditionally office-based, and as such, often reliant on more traditional means of communication, such as telephone.

But with many of these lines of communication unavailable outside of the office (at least without additional system configuration), many firms found themselves rapidly switching to less conventional communication tools – such as Microsoft Teams.

But while extremely beneficial to firms in the early stages of their response – Teams hasn’t been able to act as a long-term replacement for existing phone systems, which legal and accountancy firms have relied on so much.

However, with the announcement of Microsoft Teams Direct Routing, that has all changed. Put simply, Teams Direct Routing is a fully managed, high performing telephony solution all hosted in the cloud, through Microsoft Teams – giving firms the resilience they need to quickly adapt to changing situations.

It enables firms to make and receive calls from any device; mobile, desk phone, or laptop regardless of location. Delivering all of the features you would expect from a traditional phone system, but without the need of any hardware, software, or servers to deploy.

Microsoft Teams has already drastically changed the way we communicate within our own organisations and now it can be used to change the way we communicate with those outside. Whether you have adopted Teams or not, the ability to use one single application for all your internal and external communication is a hugely attractive offering.
