Personalised legal AI lands in UK as LexisNexis launches Protégé

Smart assistant integrates with document management platforms to carry out multi-step legal tasks and streamline workflows

LexisNexis has announced the UK launch of Protégé, its intelligent AI assistant designed to support legal professionals with drafting, research and workflow execution. The introduction of Protégé marks a significant step in the company’s AI product strategy, building on prior launches in the US and Australia, with Canada to follow shortly.

Tailored for the realities of legal practice, Protégé brings together personalised support and advanced agentic AI capabilities. It enables lawyers to complete complex, multi-stage tasks faster, with greater precision, and with less friction in day-to-day workflows. The assistant has been shaped in close partnership with leading UK firms, including Eversheds Sutherland International and Irwin Mitchell.

Protégé is embedded within Lexis+ AI and also available via Microsoft Word through Lexis Create+. Across both platforms, it delivers a secure, privacy-conscious experience while performing a broad set of functions, such as producing full transactional documents and the ability to edit documents within the product – with AI support.  It offers a secure Vault – allowing lawyers to upload thousands of documents and use AI tools to carry out specific tasks on those documents, such as building visual timelines to highlight key case events.

Powered by proprietary generative and agentic AI, Protégé operates in a way that’s grounded in both LexisNexis intelligence and, if they use the DMS connector, a firm’s own knowledge base. It is designed to act on a user’s behalf without compromising accuracy or control.

Gerry Duffy, Managing Director of LexisNexis UK, commented: “LexisNexis is focused on improving outcomes and unlocking new levels of efficiency and value in legal work to support our customers’ success. Our vision is for every legal professional to have a personalised AI assistant that makes their life better, and we’re delighted to deploy that to the UK through our world-class, fully integrated AI technology platform.”

By connecting with platforms like iManage and SharePoint, the tool can surface internal knowledge, extract precedent clauses and draft content directly from a firm’s existing materials – all within familiar environments.

The development of Protégé has been driven by feedback from legal practitioners. Irwin Mitchell was among the firms involved in its co-creation. Eleanor Windsor, Partner and Director of Knowledge at Irwin Mitchell, said: “Working closely with LexisNexis during the development of Protégé has given us the opportunity to help shape a tool that genuinely addresses the practical demands of legal work. The technology will save our teams time and allow them to focus more on strategic client matters.”

Protégé represents the latest advancement in the LexisNexis AI stack). The entire platform is designed to evolve continuously while maintaining a consistent, secure user experience.
