Is innovation outpacing integration? – OneAdvanced

Legal technology is advancing at an extraordinary speed, but is innovation outpacing integration?

Technology without strategy

Our latest Legal Trends Report 2026 highlights a striking paradox. While law firms are investing heavily in modern tools, with 64% of legal and compliance leaders reporting that they plan to accelerate investments in legal technology, many are still struggling to translate innovation into meaningful operational progress.
In too many cases, firms are adding new systems faster than they are properly integrating them. In this article, we look at why this is a rising issue in firms trying to keep pace with sector-wide adoption of legal technology.

The integration gap

Our report reveals that more than 60% of firms are facing a software integration crisis, and 64% describe themselves as stuck in “automation purgatory”, meaning they have started their digital journey, but they are failing to achieve fully connected workflows.

However, the issue likely isn’t the technology alone, but a lack of strategy around adoption. Choosing the right software can be difficult, especially with a substantial amount of internal and external factors to consider that are placing pressure on law firms in the UK from rising client expectations, AI, changing regulatory landscapes, modernisation, and the list goes on. But, when innovation is implemented without a clear operating model, firms often experience:

  • Disjointed systems
  • Manual workarounds
  • Duplicated data entries
  • Limited visibility across departments
  • Slow adoption by teams

Technology without the right integration often creates friction rather than efficiency, which erodes the value of your investment. Law firms don’t need more standalone tools; they need connected ecosystems that reflect how day-to-day legal work actually happens.

Why integration matters more than innovation

Legal work is inherently interconnected. A single matter touches case management, time recording, billing, compliance, document storage, communication, and reporting. When those elements live in separate systems that don’t talk to each other, inefficiencies multiply.

The consequences are tangible from delayed decision making, increased compliance and regulatory risk, profit-leaks, inconsistent client experiences and frustration among legal professionals in the firm.

Another challenge that our report identified was a perception gap between leadership and operational teams when it comes to demonstrating value for digital tools that have been adopted. While executives and managing partners may feel confident that systems will ‘enable more data-driven decisions’, those on the ground often still struggle to see the value as they continue deal with fragmented workflows and limited insight due to poor integration. Without a considered onboarding approach with training and firm-wide opt-in, then less than a quarter of legal departments are actually digitally ready, which has a significant impact on the benefits that firms will see from their technology investments.

Embedding technology into the flow of work

When firms are considering embedding modern legal technology, one of the key questions should be “how does this integrate into our existing workflow?”

Modern legal platforms, like OneAdvanced Legal, should align naturally with the day-to-day rhythm of the firm, meaning:

  • Seamless case and matter management
  • Integrated time capture and billing
  • Automated compliance checks
  • Centralised document management
  • Real-time reporting and analytics
  • Secure client communication

The technology firms adopt should create clarity, not complexity. If systems are integrated into the natural flow of work, adoption improves because the tool supports how legal professionals already operate, rather than forcing them to change everything at once.

Work smarter
Automated workflows eliminate repetitive manual tasks, reduce human error to avoid unnecessary duplication and reduce risk. Insights also become accessible across teams, which enables decision-making to become more proactive rather than reactive.

Work faster
Integrated systems remove bottlenecks by allowing information to flow between departments without delay. Matters progress without unnecessary handoffs and both client and employee experiences are boosted.

Improve efficiency
With tools that are properly integrated, efficiency and productivity grows tenfold. Time recording improves, administrative burden decreases, back-office visibility strengthens, and firms gain clearer oversight of profitability and performance.

Mitigate risk
With cybersecurity and compliance concerns continuing to rise, fragmented systems create vulnerability. Integrated, cloud-based platforms enhance security posture, ensure consistent data governance, and reduce exposure to regulatory risk.

Strengthen Client Communication
Client expectations are constantly evolving, there is now a greater focus on transparency, responsiveness, predictable outcomes and a digital-first service. Integrated systems that can enable better tracking, clearer reporting, and smoother communication all reinforce trust and give your firm a greater competitive advantage.

Get time back
When administrative tasks are automated, and systems work together, legal professionals spend less time navigating software and more time advising clients. In a profession built on expertise and relationships, that time is invaluable.

The hidden costs of poor integration

Firms that prioritise integration gain agility and scalability, rather than those that layer tools without alignment and face increasing operational drag.
The cost of poor integration can often show up as slower growth, reduced margins, higher risk of security exposure and the risk of reputational damage or loss of client confidence. The answer isn’t to slow down innovation, but to pace it more strategically. Before adopting new technology, firms should ask:

  • Does this integrate with our existing systems?
  • Will this reduce manual touchpoints?
  • Does it improve visibility across departments?
  • Will it strengthen security and compliance?
  • Does it align with how our teams currently operate?

Addressing these points ensures that modernisation is coherent, not chaotic. It also reduces the risk of accumulating tools that aren’t the right fit for the firm, and instead positions them to extract real value from modern automation tools and AI.

From innovation to integration

The legal sector doesn’t suffer from a lack of innovation; the legal technology market is constantly growing and adapting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed, but it is so important that firms focus on remaining connected to their strategy and ensuring the technology they adopt ‘cuts through the noise’.

In the race to modernise, it’s no longer enough to just adopt cutting-edge technology. The firms that truly lead will be those that embed it seamlessly into the fabric of their work, enabling smarter operations and stronger client relationships. That’s why at OneAdvanced, we work alongside firms to really understand their day-to-day realities first and only implement integrated technology that supports strategic priorities, mitigates risk, and enables organic, long-term growth.
