Naq Cyber: GDPR: The lioness of data legislation

The next in our #smallbusinessseries is here and this time it’s all about GDPR. Not unlike a lioness, the GDPR is fierce, but only in a good way. This is a fantastic, highly accessible guide to the legislation – if we do say so ourselves – that you can bookmark, favourite, or download, and keep.

GDPR consists of seven fundamental principles, each of which are clearly and simply explained here thanks to our CEO, Nadia’s, expert contribution, plus a concise background to why GDPR exists in the first place. You’ll also find a handful of examples and really inspiring ways in which you can turn GDPR into a rich experience for your business, while of course at the same time achieving compliance and protecting your livelihood from an unwanted fine, and even less desirable reputational damage.

Stick to the rules; don’t cheat, lie, beg or steal; and be honest and upfront about everything you’re (not) doing. That’s the easiest way to describe the first data protection principle. It exists to ensure that your customers know what you’re doing with their data, why you’re doing it, who has access to it, and that all of the above is communicated to them in a way that’s easy to understand. This principle helps to ensure all your company’s information is processed ethically, and that’s something we can all get on board with.

Since GDPR came into force, companies must take the privacy of their customers’ data extremely seriously, or face a costly fine. the legislation is applicable to any company or (government) organisation, no matter its size.

Balancing knowledge sharing with need-to-know

Information sharing and communication between teams are traditionally a struggle for even the smallest of businesses to master, so striking the balance between avoiding siloed working and the ‘need to know’ rule initially seems like a challenge. Get into the habit of sanity checking your meeting invitees and file and account access permissions. It’s easy to choose convenience (i.e. giving everyone access to everything) over confidentiality, especially if resources are stretched.

Neuroscience tells us that our decision-making capabilities quickly deplete as the day goes on; the more brain power we use on unconscious and trivial decisions, the less capacity we have to make effective decisions about the really important stuff. Limiting meeting attendees, for example, doesn’t only help ensure only those who need to know are present, it also preserves valuable decision-making energy for colleagues who simply don’t need to be there.

If you’d like to get to know us and our product in more detail, it’s easy to get in touch. Onboarding is quick, monthly or annual subscriptions include options to suit all budgets, and there’s little we love more than sharing insights from existing client and partner case studies.
