21 years of Argyll: Pioneering environmental risk management by Landmark

From vision to reality: the beginnings of Argyll Environmental

As Argyll celebrates its 21st birthday, we reflect on our journey from inception to becoming a leader in environmental risk assessments. Founded by Simon Boyle and his colleagues, Argyll started with a vision to create high-quality environmental reports. Supported by Landmark’s data, the company quickly gained traction with the UK’s top law firms.

Forging strong relationships: building trust and partnerships

Building trust with law firms was essential from the start. Early support from Paul Davies at Macfarlanes and relationships with firms like Dentons and Linklaters helped build credibility. Argyll’s approach was always about building strong, collaborative relationships rather than just making sales. This focus on quality and partnership fostered long-term connections with top law firms.

Broadening horizons: expanding the scope and supporting clients

Initially focused on contaminated land, Argyll’s scope has broadened to include sustainability and climate change, reflecting the evolving environmental landscape. Gaining trust was challenging, but the quality of the reports stood out. Key milestones include introducing flood risk reports in 2007 and acquiring and developing the Risk Horizon report, expanding Argyll’s global expertise.

Argyll’s consultant-led assessments set a new industry standard. Each report is handwritten by an expert, ensuring quality and personalisation. This approach has influenced how environmental risks are managed in property transactions, with the collaborative environment fostering comprehensive risk assessments. Argyll helps lawyers and non-experts navigate complex environmental issues by transforming data into clear, understandable assessments. Visual aids, such as color-coded risk indicators, simplify the presentation of complex data.
